Development
The facade and works inside will be completed by the fourth quarter of 2018, in time for an early 2019 opening. It will have 5 storeys above ground and 5 basement levels with a total gross floor area of 134,000 m2. The 5 basement levels will include 2500 car-parking spaces replacing existing facilities. The 5 storeys above ground will include a hotel - YOTEL that has approximately 130 hotel rooms. 90,000 m2 is set aside for retail with about 300 stores, 21,700 m2 is for indoor gardens and attractions while the rest will be used as airport facilities such as check-in counters and airport lounges.
Architectural Style
Project Jewel is being designed to be "architecturally iconic", making as the central hub connecting airport Terminals 1, 2 and 3. The design is a consortium of consultants that consists of Safdie Architects, which designed the Marina Bay Sands, Benoy, as well as local architect RSP, which was behind ION Orchard.
The building's curved geometry creates a natural location for the 'rain vortex' to form at the center of the plan. This distinctive shape also provides inherent structural strength to the stunning glass and steel dome facade, allowing the framework to remain delicate in the tradition of glass conservatories. At night, the 40m waterfall will become the backdrop for a light and sound show, visible from the dining terraces that face into the garden center. Furthermore, rainwater will also be funneled into the waterfall and harvested for reuse. Changi Airport Skytrain will be able to pass through the building from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2.
In addition, 2 new air-conditioned covered pedestrian bridges will be constructed by linking Terminals 2 and 3.
