citizenM (branded citizenM) is a Netherlands-based hotel chain. It opened its first hotel at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport in 2008, followed by one in city of Amsterdam itself in 2009. Its first overseas hotel in Glasgow opened in 2010, followed by one in London in 2012., one in Rotterdam in 2013, one in New York City in 2014 and one in Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport in 2014.

The company was co-founded by Rattan Chadha and Michael Levie, and uses the slogan "affordable luxury for the people" for its hotels. The branding and logo was developed by KesselsKramer.

The public spaces of the hotels feature the "Living Room" furnished with art and iconic furniture from companies such as Vitra, with the result that the hotel has an upbeat designer feel, with artwork and books. The design assumes intelligent, digitally-literate guests, for example, with open computer stations where guests check themselves in and out.

Hotel Architecture

Most of CitizenM hotels embrace International Style with large glass windows clad in black metal exterior wall (the one in Amsterdam using gray metal). Beside the New York location (19 floors built in 2013), most of the hotels are low rise (5 to 8 floors) buildings. The rooms have so called 'mood pads' to control television, light and temperature from one device created by Philips. or iPad Minis
